There is a growing awareness of the dangers of skin cancer, and incidence in New Zealand and Australia is amongst the highest in the world.
There are many factors that can contribute to skin cancer, but the most prominent is prolonged over-exposure to sunlight.
The three common types of skin cancer are:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of cancer and has a high incidence in New Zealand and Australia. BCC's typically occur as a result of sun exposure over the years, or repeated episodes of sunburn.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is another common type of skin cancer, and is also related to sun exposure. SCC's do have potential to spread to lymph nodes (eg in the neck), although this is still relatively uncommon.

Melanoma is a potentially serious type of skin cancer which is said to affect about 1 in 15 New Zealanders in their lifetime. The incidence of this cancer in New Zealand and Australia is among the highest in the world.
