Head and Neck Surgery is a subspecialty of otolaryngology that involves management of benign and malignant tumours of the head and neck, including the following regions.
The head and neck is a complex area of anatomy that presents significant challenges, not only in surgical resection and reconstruction, but also in rehabilitation. Following surgery, patients often require regular input from other specialists and services.
Dr Ryan has strong links with Oncologists, Maxillofacial Surgeons, Speech Therapists, and Dieticians. A "combined approach" is frequently used to maximise the outcome following major surgery.
Dr Ryan has fellowship training in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery, and is a member of the Dunedin Hospital Head and Neck Service. This multidisciplinary team meets on a weekly basis to discuss and co–ordinate the management of patients with Head and Neck Cancer in the Otago Region.
